Genesis and Evolution

Yogoda Satsanga Brahmacharya Vidyalaya
Yogoda Satsanga Brahmacharya Vidyalaya, 1917

The genesis of Yogoda Satsanga Mahavidyalaya lies in the noble vision of Paramahansa Yogananda, who, encouraged by his guru Swami Sri Yukteswar, began to systematize the spiritual training of young disciples while also providing them with a basic education. With the enthusiastic patronage of the Maharaja of Kashimbazar, Sir Manindra Chandra Nundy, a formal organizational beginning was made on March 22, 1917, with the founding of Yogoda Satsanga Brahmacharya Vidyalaya with just seven boys at Dihika, West Bengal.

A year later, inspired by the remarkable growth of the school, which soon became too large for the Dihika site, the Maharaja graciously provided his summer palace along with its 25-acre grounds at Ranchi, Jharkhand. Thus, in 1918, the institution was relocated, marking a significant step in its expansion and laying the foundation for the later development of Yogoda Satsanga Mahavidyalaya.

In its early years, the Ranchi establishment functioned as a residential boys’ school with a capacity of around one hundred students. Paramahansa Yogananda himself formulated the academic programme, which was designed to contribute to the all-round development of the body, mind, and soul. The curriculum included agriculture, industrial, commercial, and academic subjects, and in keeping with the time-honoured educational ideals of the rishis, many classes were conducted outdoors.

A distinctive feature of the institution at Ranchi was the initiation of students into Kriya Yoga. The daily routine included regular spiritual practices, recitation of Gita slokas, and the inculcation of virtues such as simplicity, self-sacrifice, honour, and truth. Alongside his administrative and teaching duties, Paramahansaji played a deeply personal and parental role in the lives of his students. Recalling his experiences after many decades, Sri S. K. D. Banerjee, a former student, noted that Paramahansaji was like a father to them and that merely living in his presence was itself a spiritual education, inspiring them toward the goal of divine perfection.

When Paramahansaji departed for the West in 1920, he entrusted the care and guidance of the students to the other teachers of the institution, ensuring the continuity of its ideals and mission.

In 1935, during his year-long visit to India, Paramahansaji purchased this property from the Maharaja’s son, Sri Shirish Chandra Nundy. The acquisition was made possible through the contributions of his disciples in America, the support of his father Sri Bhagabati Charan Ghosh, and the funds he had saved from his lectures in America and Europe. Rajarsi Janakananda, the beloved and exalted disciple of Paramahansaji and the second president of YSS/SRF, also made a generous donation toward this purchase. The names of all those who contributed to establishing the Ranchi School on a firm footing are engraved on the pillar of the Main Building in the Yogoda Satsanga Sakha Math, Ranchi, and although Yoganandaji seldom spoke of his father’s contribution, it played a crucial role in the founding of the organization.

Over time, the institution underwent significant structural developments. In 1967, major renovation work was carried out under the guidance of Swami Shyamananda Giri. Later, in 1979, a concrete roof was constructed and essential repairs were undertaken to preserve and safeguard the building for posterity, while carefully retaining its original architectural design, including the sloping roof and ancient wooden beams.

By 1968, the institution had expanded considerably, with about 1,400 boys and 400 girls enrolled in the YSS High Schools and nearly 800 students in its two colleges. Owing to this rapid expansion, it became necessary to shift the educational institutions beyond the ashram premises. Accordingly, in 1981, the boys’ school and college were relocated to Jagannathpur, approximately 11 kilometers from the ashram, while the original building began to serve as office space for the growing needs of the spiritual organization.
